Fire pit weather is upon us. Pumpkin beers, pumpkin spiced latte’s, and pumpkin candles are invading your social media timelines. But does that mean beer fest season is over? NO!!! Voted the best beer festival in Kansas City in 2015, Festival of Lost Township is back and even better. This next weekend, Saturday September 17, 2016, Crane Brewing has partnered up with Apex Brew Wares to bring two beer festivals for the price of one. This year The Festival of the Lost Township is featuring Brewtopia, a homebrew festival. To put this another way, Crane has made sure that your favorite local and regional breweries are well represented, new to me will be Central Standard Brewing and Colony Espresso and Beer. I am excited to see what they have to offer. Crane also made friends with out of market breweries, some of which are making the trip with great brews that you will want to target. Chris Meyers specified that among the out of markets you should definitely check out Mikerphone, Destihl, Kolibri, Brickstone and Toolbox flying in from Vista, California. Crane will be launching their fall seasonal sour, Beet Weiss. The inspiration for this beer came from their homebrewed beer, Magenta. Still earthy, tart, and very unique. You will be able to try it first at the festival before it hits the market the following week.
When you make your way to the homebrewers area you will see more than 50 homebrewers with beers, styles, and flavors that are beyond creative. I would go find the Medley Ale Works, Middle Ground Zymurgy & Tapworx, Missouri Mashers, Level Two Brewing, and so many more. Brewtopia is offering a People’s Choice contest for best brews overall hat you will be able to cast a ballot in with first, second, and third place getting prizes. You will notice that a lot of the homebrewers have Belgian style ales available for you to drink. While some of the brewers like Level Two excel at these styles, Crane Brewing will partner with a homebrewer for a scale up of their homebrew based on tradional Belgian farmhouse ale style beer entries.
You should definitely come visit me as Scouting the Taps will be offering some homebrew. At Brewtopia, I will have Ale X, a 10.5% Imperial Stout resting on bourbon soaked red wine oak staves. Sweet Genius is a light and crisp saison made with honey and only Sorachi Ace hops. Cambridge Cream Ale is a non traditional cream with lactose added to bring a cream mouth feel and vanilla bean added. Think a Vanilla Cream Soda but with alcohol. Two of my friends and I collaborated on a saison called Junipucker. This tart saison is brewed with juniper berries and is very refreshing.
How much does the best beer fest in Kansas City cost? If you buy now on the Lost Township website it is only $35 for General Admission.
